Getting in Touch After a First Date
When you have a good time on a first date you may be excited to talk to the person again. In fact, as soon as you get home you may want to pick up the phone and call them, but you should hold ld off. There are some simple guidelines that you can follow that will help you give the impression that you want to give without seeming overly eager or aggressive. You have to move slowly at first because you don’t want to scare someone off! It is a careful balance knowing when to call and when not to call, as you want to be eager but not too eager.
When to Call and What to Say
After a first date you should immediately send a thank you note. This should not be a phone call, though. In fact, it would be great if it was a text message or email. You can simply say, “Thanks for a good time!” and leave it at that. This will let the person know that you did have a good time and you would like to hear from them again.
You shouldn’t call for at least 48 hours after the date. If you call before this you may seem overly eager to get together again which is a turn off. If you wait more than two days you run the risk of waiting too long and sending the message that you weren’t interested or that you are into game playing. Two days seems to be the amount of time that will give the best impression to both men and women.
When you do call, simply call to see if they would like to go out again. It’s a good idea to keep the call short and sweet so that way you have things to talk about when you meet again and will also keep you from seeming to needy or overly eager. Remember, we all want to be wanted but wanting too much can be unappealing.
When you do call, have an idea of what you are going to say, especially if you are nervous. Before calling run through what you can say. When you’re talking be sure that you come across as happy to hear their voice, as this will transmit across the phone lines and will make them more eager to see you, too.
If you have told someone that you are going to call, be sure that you do. The worst thing you can do is say, “I’ll call you on Thursday” and then not call. Again, your date may assume that you are playing games and from that time on you will get nothing but excuses or answering machines in response to your request.
